Local Communities

Why do we need Intergenerational Practice?

Intergenerational practice (IG) offers very different perspectives to different generations. The ethos of IG practice is local communities to have a better understanding of their positive impact on older people now and in the future.

Key benefits for local communities of Intergenerational practice include:

  • A better connection between generations helping to build bridges and close gaps
  • Can reduce levels of fear of crime through a better understanding of younger people
  • Provides excellent opportunities to pass on collective community and life memories to children
  • Leads to more people being active citizens in their community
  • Results in sharing of spaces, facilities, and resources
  • Increased satisfaction with home and neighbourhood
  • Development of greater understanding and tolerance of others

Research

Research suggests that IG has:

  • Social and Emotional benefits for adults, children and young people include developing a wider sense of community and supporting the development of a healthy understanding of the ageing and child development processes. Friendships and deep relationships are developed which supports self concept.

  • Cognitive and language development benefits. There is evidence to suggest improved cognitive ability is developed while engaging with different generations. By creating the opportunity to learn new skills and sharing older skills. Language and communication are developed when the young and old are able to have meaningful conversations.

Training

The IG Diploma programme delivered by AHN Intergenerational Education & Training will positively impact volunteers, staff and employers by:

  • Offering unique training opportunities which should contribute to retention and assist as a selling point in recruitment.
  • Gaining knowledge of lifespan development, an ability to meet age-appropriate developmental needs, and training in aspects of caregiving that are particular to the age group that is not their specialty.
  • Equipping volunteers and staff with the ability to plan and prepare their own IG projects
