Why do we need Intergenerational Practice?
Intergenerational practice (IG) offers very different perspectives to different generations. The ethos of IG practice is for younger people to have a better understanding of their positive impact on older people now and in the future.

Research
Research suggests that IG has:
- Emotional benefits for residents including reduced feelings of isolation and loneliness, lower rates of depression, increased dignity, an improved sense of purpose and a more positive self-image and control in their lives.
- Physical health benefits including increased mobility and flexibility and experiencing less falls. There is also evidence to suggest improved cognitive ability while engaging with children and young people by creating the opportunity to learn new skills and sharing older skills. There is also evidence suggesting that this practice results in reduced ageism and more favourable impressions of older adults.

IG practice contributed to an ‘Outstanding’ grade from the CQC
‘People benefited from innovation through intergenerational activities. Nightingale House had a pre-school and day care for children on its premises, a first of its kind in the U.K. People using the service and the nursery children took part in daily intergenerational activities such as singing, gardening and cooking. They told us the interactions uplifted them, brought endless joy to their lives and took the focus away of an ageing mindset’.
